Launched an ambitious project: a 2,000-foot-long horseshoe-shaped barrier with a 10-foot skirt hanging from it. According to the Dutch group, it is intended to float on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a collection of plastic almost the size of Alaska, and catch garbage for disposal “like a giant Pac-Man, skimming the surface.” The launch from the previous year, however, was disappointing: The rubbish continued to float away, then one component separated and drove the machinery return to port for repair. The organization continues to maintain that by 2040, its advancing technologies will have reduced ocean plastic by 90%.
