Welcome to Be the Solution to Pollution!

Our focus is to bring attention to the plastic waste problem and the fact that manufacturers should bear responsibility for the packaging and products they create. Less than 9% of all plastic is recycled.  Single-use plastic is connected to climate change from fossil fuel extraction, production, and distribution, and in the end most is buried, burned, or left in the environment.

The Problem

It’s not every day you think about how prominent plastic is, but I challenge you to think about it for a second. How many plastic items can you list and what are they? You probably thought about plastic bottles. What about your toothbrush or even your clothes? Plastic is such a wide-use material that it can be used in just about anything. However, this material doesn’t break down easily which leads to problems when disposing of it.

When talking about plastics, it has to be taken with a holistic view, meaning that plastic affects everything in the world. When plastic is burned, the chemicals are released into the air. Fence line communities, which we talk about on a different page, are directly affected by this as pollutants surround their homes and directly impact their health. However, if plastic is simply discarded or littered, it tends to end up in the ocean. Here it’ll break up into microplastics and end up in the digestive tracks of wildlife. Where eventually we will meet the same fate, as the fish we eat or the water we drink contains plastics.

So how can we stop it? Well, there are plenty of ways to Take Action. Brand-Audits are a way to collect data to dispute the top producing plastic companies, like Coca-Cola. Otherwise, there are legislations to support to cut down on plastics and prevent the problem from getting worse.
